03 Mar Part V- PREVENTION IS THE BEST CURE
What you put at the end of your fork is more powerful medicine than anything you will find at the bottom of a pill bottle. Food is the most powerful medicine available to heal chronic disease, which will account for over 50 million deaths and cost the global economy $47 trillion by 2030. All you need to do is eat your medicine and think of your grocery store as your pharmacy. —Dr. Mark Hyman, scholar and New York Times best-selling author
The Core Plan to Prevent Chronic Diseases
1 Healthy Eating
SEVEN TOP SUPER FOODS TO PREVENT CHRONIC DISEASES
Here are other anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich Fruits: guyabano (soursop or graviola), pomegranates, plums, grapes*, apples*, mangoes, figs, citrus (including the peel), persimmons, guava, mangosteen, pomelo, passion fruit, dragon fruit, and pineapple. *Please eat organic only
(3) HERBS AND SPICES: A great place to discover the medicinal value of herbs is in the kitchen, as common culinary herbs and spices have many medicinal uses. The next time you prepare dinner, try using a variety of spices to flavor the meal. They just might save your life! A growing body of research indicates that many spices can help prevent cancer and other chronic diseases.
• Oregano – Of all culinary herbs, oregano, an old favourite for pizzas and pasta sauces, ranks highest for antioxidant content. A recent Department of Agriculture study shows oregano offers more antioxidant activity than other cooking herbs. Gram per gram, fresh oregano has demonstrated 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges and 4 times more than blueberries. The compound quercetin may be especially protective against breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers.
• Ginger – Ginger helps fight nausea, and contains the active ingredient gingerol that has been proven effective in slowing the growth of human colorectal cancer cells. Gingerol suppressed tumor growth, tumor blood supply and killed cancerous cells in several human laboratory experiments. Fifty antioxidants from the rhizome of ginger have been identified. Scientists suggest that an anti-inflammatory agent that is also an antioxidant could have significant anticancer activity.
• Cumin – Cumin seeds are an excellent source of iron, a mineral that plays many vital roles in the body. Iron is an integral component of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to all body cells.
It is also part of key enzyme systems for energy production and metabolism. Additionally, iron is instrumental in keeping your immune system healthy. Cumin seeds may have anti-carcinogenic properties. In one study, cumin was shown to protect laboratory animals from developing stomach or liver tumors. This cancer-protective effect may be due to cumin’s potent free radical scavenging abilities, as well as its ability to enhance the liver’s detoxification enzymes. Free radical scavenging and detoxification are important considerations for the general maintenance of health. Cumin seeds have traditionally been noted to be of benefit to the digestive system. Research has shown that cumin may stimulate the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, compounds necessary for proper digestion and nutrient assimilation.
• Turmeric – Curcumin, the yellow pigment in turmeric, is a new darling among anticancer researchers. The bright yellow Indian spice has anti-inflammatory and powerful antioxidant properties believed to be particularly useful in fighting colon and breast cancer. Similar in strength to Vitamins C and E, it has a wide-ranging effect on the body’s immune system. Curcumin acts on lymphocytes and other immune cells, as well as enhancing wound healing. Additionally, curcumin has been found to prevent tumor growth, kill cancerous cells, arrest the spread of cancer and disrupt tumor blood supply in laboratory human studies.
• Basil – Basil is a very good source of vitamin A through its concentration of carotenoids, such as beta-carotene. Called “pro-vitamin A,” since it can be converted into vitamin A, beta-carotene is more powerful of an anti-oxidant than vitamin A. It protects epithelial cells (the cells that form the lining of numerous body structures, including blood vessels) from free radical damage, and helps prevent free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the blood stream. Only after it has been oxidized does cholesterol build up in blood vessel walls, initiating the development of atherosclerosis. This end result can induce a heart attack or stroke.
Important: There are numerous foods that show an ability to slow tumor growth and prevent chronic diseases. Moringa, pineapple, virgin coconut oil and milk, bitter melon, kale, guyabano, deep sea fish, quinoa, ginger, turmeric, green tea, spinach, seaweed and other foods are among the reasons that I heavily favor a mixed, highly nutritious diet as a foundation for cancer therapy. Food treats malnutrition. Food contains essential nutrients that stimulate the immune system and provide valuable protection against carcinogens and auto-immune causing agents. Food contributes many poorly understood components that greatly enhance the recovery of a cancer patient. Many foods have tremendous therapeutic value in helping the patient fight cancer and other chronic diseases.
