Healthy Green Solutions to Weight Loss

An alarming global reality: we have more than 1 billion overweight adults, 530 million of them are obese!

The EPIDEMIC…

In the last decade, obesity has become a worldwide pandemic. Evidence of the epidemic is everywhere, with global implications for health and chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain forms of cancer, hypertension and stroke.

In 2011, a survey of the Philippines’ Food and Nutrition Research Institute revealed that 22.3% of Filipino adults are overweight and 6.1% are obese. That means 22.3 million are overweight, and 1.3 million of them are obese and increasing.

About 85% of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, are caused by excess weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many chronic diseases and health conditions (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]).

Excess weight increases a person’s risk of more than 50 different medical conditions that affect all major systems of the body (Harvard Medical School).

Neurological: Headache * Stroke Dementia, including Alzheimer’s Vision loss from diabetes complications Pseudomotor cerebri (false brain tumor)

Diabetic Neuropathy

Psychological: Depression * Anxiety Eating disorders

Circulatory: High blood pressure High cholesterol * Atherosclerosis Irregular heartbeat * Heart attack, Heart failure * Poor Circulation * Leg and ankle swelling * Blood clots Peripheral artery disease * Certain lymphomas (lymph node cancers)

Respiratory: Asthma * Sleep apnea, Pulmonary embolism * Pulmonary hypertension

Gastrointestinal: Reflux disease, Esophageal cancer * Colon polyps, Colon Cancer * Fatty liver disease, Cirrhosis * Liver Cancer * Gallstones, Gallbladder cancer

Musculoskeletal: Arthritis (especially hips, knees and ankles) * Low back pain * Vertebral disk disease

Reproductive–Women: Irregular menses * Infertility * Pregnancy complications * Polycystic ovarian syndrome * Ovarian cancer, Endometrial cancer, Cervical cancer, Breast Cancer.

Men: Prostate Cancer * Infertility, Erectile dysfunction

THREE MAIN FACTORS TO WEIGHT GAIN…

Genetic: slow metabolism and low calorie-burning rate * tendency to overeat due to poor control of appetite and impaired ability to feel full * propensity to be physically inactive * slowed ability to burn calories from fat * tendency to develop a large number of fat cells and to store high levels of fat in the body. These are the forces inside each one of us that make us gain weight and stay overweight;

Personal: age, gender, diet, lifestyle, ethnicity

Socio-cultural: community influences, societal influences, and social norms and values. Personal and socio-cultural factors are the outside forces that contribute to the overweight/obesity epidemic.
